Planning the future with Planets: a preservation planning tutorial

Planets is organising a two-day tutorial on preservation planning. It will be held on 14-15 April 2008 in Vienna, Austria. The event is intended to offer a complete overview of preservation planning and provide attendees the opportunity to learn about Planets' approach and technique. Find out more and register

Presentation of Preservation Characterisation work

Planets' preservation characterisation work will be presented by Adrian Brown, The National Archives (UK) at the JISC/BL/DPC workshop "What to preserve? Significant Properties of Digital Objects". The workshop takes place on 7 April 2008 at the British Library Conference Centre, London, UK.

Planets’ contribution to the understanding of significant properties lies in the effort to automate the process of identifying, describing and extracting the essential characteristics of digital objects. Planets is developing a methodology for describing these significant properties, a suite of tools and services for automatically characterising a range of specific object types in accordance with this methodology, and a supporting registry of characterisation information.

The goal of the workshop is "to bring together the relevant projects and report on progress to date. It is also hoped that the workshop will lead to collective recommendations for future areas of research and development. The workshop should in addition further our understanding of and provide insight into a number of specific types of digital objects, including documents, images, software, scientific data, government records and e-learning objects."
